HERALDRY

I created this link on my website not only to show my interest and passion on the art of Heraldry. But  to as well share my knowledge and point of views on such art. This is one of the many objectives of IAAH (International Association of Amateur Heralds) wherein I am a proud member. Heraldry does not only focus on blazoning and emblazoning of coat of arms.
It is used as well in the study of genealogy which made use coat of arms in some European countries. A lot of people thought that they can assume coat of arms for use by just searching or buying arms from stores selling arms that bear the same surname as theirs. This thinking is wrong. Coat of arms are usually granted by heraldic authorities such as the College of Arms in London or the Court of Lord Lyon in Scotland. These arms are granted only to a worthy individual. In the Philippines like the United states  there is no such authority that regulates and registers coat of arms. Except the R.A 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic code of the Philippines. This law does not clearly state the prohibition of private citizens from bearing arms. Well, this may be one of our benefit of being sovereign people. What I mean is we can simply assume what ever coat of arms we like as long as it follow the correct heraldic tradition. The only stated official coat of arms used by individuals in the Philippines are the Seal of the President and Vice President of the republic.
In the southern part of Mindanao in the Philippines practicing sub-national monarchy there is a College of Arms in Sultanate of Sulu and Sabah that grants arms to selected worthy individuals. Arms they grant are usually associated with orders of knighthood such as the Order of Kiram, Royal Order of Hashem of Sabah and etc.
Coat of Arms are used in the 12th century by knights as their form of identification in the battlefield. In modern times arms are still in existence not only as a decoration but as an identification of a persons nobility and achievements. PLs look forward for my future posts for more information on heraldry and coat of arms.
